Design Process
Concepting
This was our first assignment in our school where we were tasked to build a simulation PONG game using only Stencyl. We were also given a stencyl file which includes a base game of PONG with no title screen, winning screen, or even a single sound effect.
From what you can see in this gameplay footage, this was the "template" game that was given by the lecture. It was a simple, empty, endless PONG game.
So for this assignment, we were required to:
- Make a main title screen
- Make a tutorial
- End the game when a player scores hit 15 points
- Include 2 Ending Screen depending on which player had won
- Include 2 Power-ups/Abilities
- Include sound effects
- Have 2 game modes
- Have different assets other than the sample from the gameplay footage.
So, as a guy that was addicted to Fumo (Touhou plushies) videos (until now). I decided to make a PONG game that was based on this video I found on Twitter (created by @Yumemimeme).
After all, it's a game of PONG with a Touhou character named Cirno. So why not?
Pre-Production
After I came up with this great idea for a PONG game. I started thinking about the extra game mechanics such as the power-ups/abilities, game modes, as well as the scoring system that would be able to tell which character would win. Here's what I came up with:
Power-ups/Abilities
Speed Up: Player's paddle would be able to move twice its speed for 9 seconds. This can be used when the ball is too far away from the players.
(Now you maybe wonder, why 9 seconds? This is because that 9 is Cirno's signature number)
Freeze: Opposite player's paddle will not be able to move for 2 seconds.
The 2 Game Modes
Casual Mode: This mode would act as a "normal mode" in this game. Players will be playing a normal game of PONG until a player score 15 points.
Nightclub Mode: This is a second game mode where the ball will move twice its speed. Players would have to react faster in this game mode.
Scoring System
- When a player's ball hits the opposite goal point, that player will obtain a point.
- When a player wins the game by scoring 15 points, a specific game over/winning screen would show up. (example: when Player A wins the game, a game over screen will show that Player A had won the game)
Production
Now that I had planned out what I wanted to make, I opened my Stencyl and Photoshop to get started. For Stencyl it would be the coding and the play testing, as for Photoshop it would be used for image editing since most of the assets for this character's plushie are hard to find. So I would have to edit the images by myself. Not only that, I also use Photoshop for texts as well. Here are the assets in this game:

I had also use some music for this game as well. However, in Nightclub Mode, I decided to make the background music by myself. Here's the music for Nightclub Mode:
